Often we hear from the wise people that we should not be selfish. However, there is no work without selfish motive. Whoever is doing something has some happiness or pleasure or satisfaction in doing something. Take the example of Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi. Both might have felt some internal peace in doing some service.
When we relate the activities, which fulfills our senses we call them as selfish and whatever is not related to sense fulfilling we call them unselfishness. But, behind those unselfish activities there is mind fulfilling. So, all activities are selfish only.
That is why Bagavat Gita teaches to surrender the fruit of all Karmas. When we do not feel about the fruits and when we are neutral towards the fruit then that is Karma yoga. Basically one should be neutral to anything. Apart from that there is no word like unselfishness.
When someone says that he is doing something unselfishly then he is a cheater.
